Troubleshooting
Turn a vague car symptom into useful information
You do not need to diagnose the car. A precise observation is more valuable than a confident guess.
Capture the conditions
Record speed, engine temperature, weather, road surface, steering or braking input, fuel level, and whether the problem changes after a restart.
Locate and repeat
Describe where a sound or vibration seems strongest and whether it repeats with road speed, engine speed, bumps, turns, or braking.
Know when to stop
Stop driving when the vehicle tells you to, or when braking, steering, visibility, overheating, smoke, a fuel smell, or severe vibration makes continued driving unsafe.
