Car basics
A practical guide to the systems in your car
A car is easier to care for when you can place a symptom in the right system. Start with these six groups before you search for a repair.
Power and motion
The engine or traction motor creates motion; the transmission, axles, and wheels deliver it to the road. Warning lights, fluid leaks, vibration, and changes in acceleration are useful clues.
Stopping and steering
Brakes, tires, suspension, and steering are safety-critical. A pull, shake, grinding sound, or change in pedal feel deserves prompt attention.
Electrical and climate
The battery, charging system, computers, sensors, lights, and climate controls share a growing electrical network. Record exactly when an intermittent problem appears.
