Troubleshooting

Common car problems and the first facts to collect

Similar symptoms can have very different causes. Use these prompts to collect facts, not to replace an inspection.

The car will not start

Note whether the engine cranks, whether lights dim, whether you hear a click, and whether a jump changes the behavior. Avoid repeated long cranking.

Temperature rises

Turn off air conditioning, follow the owner’s manual, and find a safe place to stop if the warning persists. Never open a hot pressurized cooling system.

A new leak appears

Photograph the location and color without touching or tasting the fluid. Fuel odor, brake-fluid loss, or rapid coolant loss can require towing.
