Troubleshooting
What an OBD-II code can—and cannot—tell you
A trouble code identifies a condition the vehicle computer detected. It usually names a circuit or system, not the part that must be replaced.
Save the complete code
Record every letter and digit, the warning-light behavior, and freeze-frame information if the scan tool provides it. Clearing codes also clears useful evidence.
Why diagnosis still matters
Wiring, connectors, air leaks, mechanical faults, software, sensors, and control modules can create overlapping codes. Testing separates the cause from the symptom.
Urgency
A flashing malfunction light often indicates a condition that can damage the emissions system. Follow the owner’s manual and reduce driving until the vehicle is assessed.
